I WOULD BROADLY CLASSIFY HINDI FILMS IN THREE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES :
1) ONE – TIME WATCH
Awesome bollywood movies are the ones which we can never get tired of. Every movie buff remembers the scenes from these popular movies. The Dialogues are a hit with the masses and can be heard on the streets in normal life situations like a roadside romeo wooing his girlfriend with ” Aye Kya Bolti Tu’ from Ghulam which is one of the thousands of awesome films Bollywood has produced.
if you have seen them, you will certainly correlate when i say that these are those gems of bollywood that can be seen a million times again and again without getting bored. Films like these can never be rated in numbers Hence i would not place the numbers , they all are equally popular and entertaining. We will go from the latest to the oldest.
A Timeless Feel Good Film about college life, friendship and Love
Starring : Aamir Khan ,Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan,
Sharman Joshi, Omi Vaidya and Boman Irani
Directed by : Rajkumar Hirani
Aamir Khan teaches his friends that the mind is very naive and if you say ” Aal izz well ” , it understands and relaxes even though Aal izz not well at all. Aal izz well instantly hit with the masses and everywhere you went they responded with Aal izz well when someone inquired with a question about their well being 3 Idiots is a very simple concept based on Chetan Bhagat’s book ‘Five Point Someone’ about 3 students studying in India’s most reputed Engineering college. This film left parents with an impact and many understood the importance of allowing their kids to follow their passions. It also left us wondering about the education system of India. Education should be about learning and not simply mugging up textbooks was depicted in a humorous way by Aamir showing his zip as a simple machine followed by Aamir khan’s defintion of Books.
The Look on the face of Aamir and the professor had me in splits laughing out loud.
The Negative characters in the film are also extremely adorable and funny , the principal Viru Sahastrabuddhe shortened to Virus by his students played by Boman Irani who does not bother about student suicides and is only bothered about the competition, grades and the survival of the fittest , He writes with both hands at one time, He has programmed himself to make optimum use of his time. His shaving his done when he is busy taking his afternoon nap as shaving is considered as an unproductive activity by him.
The second negative character is Chatur or Silencer played by Omi Vaidya Omi vaidya’s has an extremely funny accent when he speaks Hindi and the speech that he gives in the auditorium addressing the chief guest is extremely hilarious..No matter how many times you have heard the silencer’s speech . You will laugh hysterically whenever you hear it again.
The movie entertains in every scene. Sharman Joshi and R Madhavan play their roles to perfection and the bond of friendship looks fabulous with their chemistry. Especially when they both appreciate what Aamir did for them and say in Unison ‘ Jahanpana tusi great ho ! Tohfa Kubool Kijiye’ , the scene has us in tears.
The scene where they bring back a non responding Raju back to life his extremely emotional, as is is the song ‘ Jane Nahin denge tujhe’ , Student suicide is a very sensitive topic .Do they deserve Such pressure that they ultimately give up and end their lives ?. Students have hardly seen the world, they do not deserve to die at that stage, Even if they do not wish to be a part of the rat race, they still deserve to live and follow their passions.
The Films songs appeal to the youth “Give me some sunshine, give me some rain. Give me another chance , i want to grow up once again”. Hadn’t we all wished at some stage in our lives to become children again and grow up once again. This film makes you laugh, makes you cry and then leaves you with a message.
3 idiots was also released in local theaters of Hong Kong with Chinese subtitles. I saw some Chinese people connecting with the emotions of the film and revisiting thqe theaters to watch the film again. This is a film for generations to.come and i am sure one of the best films to come out of the indian movie industry. Kudos to Rajkumar Hirani, Chetan Bhagat and Aamir Khan for creating this epic.
An Epic Action Film. A Typical Bollywood film with Everything from Friendship, Love and Revenge
Starring : Dharamendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini and Amjad Khan
Directed by : Ramesh Sippy
Sholay tops all charts when it comes to popularity. A Film made in 1975 by Ramesh Sippy was released again in 2014 in 3D Format. It was still house full. the film has major viewership and following even . Today. Sholay is a film that appeals to all generations and all age groups. It is not just a film. Sholay is an experience. It is the finest film ever made in bollywood with all the scenes skillfully shot . It was written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. It is one of most fantastic story written by them.
It is one the most famous films whose characters and dialogues are extremely popular.
Gabbar Singh is still the most dreaded dacoit. It is difficult to believe that they had rejected Amjad Khan because of his voice initially and that Amitabh Bachchan had tried to convince sippy sahab to play gabbar.
‘Kitne Aadmi The’ he says walking slowly on the rocks with his belt hitting the rocks surface and after the inquiry session is over when he realizes that his troop of three men had been overpowered by only two men , the screen flashes the ghastly face of the dreaded Gabbar shouting ‘ Suar Ke Bachon ‘ .This film established Amjad khan has one of the most popular villains of Indian Cinema
‘Are O Samba’ he says to Mc Mohan who is sitting highly placed on a rock probably playing the security guard for alerting if the police were near. ‘Door Gaon mein jab koi bacha rota hai, to maa kehti hai beta so jaa nahin to Gabbar aa jayega ‘ He shouts , makes the boys laugh at his jokes and then shoots them one by one ending his first ever scene in cinema with epic lines like ‘ Jo Darr Gaya, Samjho Marr Gaya’
Jay and Veeru’s friendship is known to everyone. Two very good friends are still termed as Jay and Veeru.
There friendship shines throughout the film even if Jay spoils all chances of Veeru impressing Basanti and her family . He gives his life in the end, Jay spins the coin that acts as a deciding factor as who stays and who goes Be it Veeru’s extroverted extravagant love with Basanti Tangewali played by the eternally gorgeous Hema Malini Or Jay’s Introverted and unspoken feelings for Jaya Bachchan’s character in the film.
There is a extremely jovial Soorma Bhopali played by Jagdeep who tells the story of how he caught jay and veeru and sent them to prison to a group of innocent looking village folk. Amitabh shows his impeccable comic timing when he speaks to Basanti’s mausiji about Veeru’s character.
And Dharamji then has us laughing hysterically when he attempts suicide and scares the villagers by blaming them and mausiji . Sums it up by saying “Mausi jail me chakki peesing and peesing “
Another very strong character that sholay has is Thakur Saab played by the late- Sanjeev kumar. His hands were chopped off by Gabbar Singh and the entire story revolves around Thakur Sahab’s revenge
Thakur sahab wears a shawl which covers his shoulders and no one is aware that he has no hands until the deciding scene where he has to lift a gun and pass to Veeru.
Two Vagabonds who committed petty thefts for a living and lived a life full of crime are transformed completely and they start feeling the villagers emotions and the trauma that they go throw following the atrocities of the famous dacoit Gabbar Singh.
Sholay is a film that my grand mother had loved when he she was alive, It is a film that i had seen with my Grandparents. I am sure Sholay will be a film that i might see sitting with my Grandchildren too
More on Bollywood in the next issue. Till then enjoy the latest flavors of bollywood , Grab a DVD and watch these movies just in case you have missed them or if you are feeling nostalgic after reading this article coming straight from my fond memories.
DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE
A Timeless Romantic Film about Falling in Love
Starring : Starring : Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher
Directed By : Aditya Chopra
‘Come Fall In love’ reads the films tag-line. This movie created Shah Rukh Khan, the romantic superstar
Kajol blinked her enchanting mesmerizing eyes and danced in a towel to a song which sums up the dream of every young girl who hopes for a prince charming to come on a white horse and sweep her off her feet ‘Mere Khwabo me ho aaye , aake mujhe ched jaye, Use Kaho kabhi saamne to aaye’.
Before this film SRK had done negative roles and other ordinary roles. but this film put him at what he does best , swing his arms in his charming style and sing beautiful romantic songs like ‘ Tujhe dekha to yeh jaana sanam, Pyaar hota hai deewana sanam’. He has always redefined love and its essence. SRK has been the walking school of love. Unconditional love is his forte, he loves his heroine irrespective of everything. Even the fact that she is getting married to someone else in an arranged marriage fixed by her family. He visits them to win their hearts and steal Simran from the prospective groom and take his dulhaniya with him.
Usually Bollywood potboilers have lovers eloping from the house and ultimately dying in the end. But Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ) has its protagonist Raj who has a heart of gold and carries it on his sleeve for his Simran. He says ” Yeh hamare maa-baap hai, Inse Bhaag kar hum jayenge bhi to Kahan’
Anupam Kher plays a dream dad. A father everyone wants to have. He loves his son Raj, celebrates his failures and even sips beer with him..He spices up the second half on reaching Punjab with his humor, sensitivity and style. The film sums up with a highly electric fight after which Raj decides to board the train. An Emotional Simran begs her father to leave her hand as she will die without Raj and Amrish Puri famously leaves his daughters hand and says ” Jaa Simran Jaa, Jee Le Apni Zindagi’.
To me SRK does not look really good in this movie but i was impressed by his ability to express his emotions. He says his dialogues in a very charming way and definitely has amazing style.
Europe leaves you awestruck with his scenic beauty in the first half. And Punjab leaves you spellbound with its beautiful fields and jovial and full of life people in the second half. When Amrish Puri sings Ae meri zohra jabi tujhe maloom nahi’ he leaves us with the nostalgia of the great Balraj sahni.
Dilwale Dulhaniya is definitely one of the most beautiful romantic film ever made in the history of Indian cinema. Kudos to SRK, Aditya Chopra , Kajol, Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher.
